THE MAIN ENGINE JACKET WATER EXPANSION TANK SERVES 3 MAIN PURPOSES....
1. IT PROVIDES A POSITIVE HEAD ON THE JACKET WATER PUMP
2. IT PROVIDES MAKE UP WATER FOR THE LOST WATER IN THE SYSTEM
3. IT PROVIDES FOR THE EXPANSION AND COOLING OF WATER WHICH IS COMING OUT OF THE SYSTEM AT ABOUT 85-90 DEG CEL.

THE PISTON COOLING WATER OUTLET IS KEPT AT A MAXIMUM OF 65 DEG CEL(SULZER MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDATIONS....
IF WE PROVIDE AN EXPANSION TANK FOR PISTON COOLING,THE WEIGHT OF THE MOVING PISTON INCREASES,BEACAUSE OF THE AVAILABLE HEAD ON THE PUMP,OR THE WATER FILLED PISTON....
WE NEED TO LOWER THE WEIGHT OF THE WORKING PISTON, RATHER THAN INCREASE IT...BESIDES,THERE IS REALLY NO NEED OF MAKE UP WATER FOR THE SYSTEM AND,BEING A DOUBLE BOTTOM TANK,IT MAY PROVIDE FOR EXPANSION OF THE LIQUID AS WELL...

maximum pressure or peak pressure as it is commonly called is the max pressure inside the cylinder normally in generators we used to take peak pressures
in an engine cylinder the pressure will not be constant it will be varying as indicated in an indicator diagram. to make calculation easier if we consider a constant pressure acts on piston througout the cycle which produces same amount of power as a varying pressure produces then this constant pressure is called mean effective pressure it is of two types
indicated m.e.p and brake m.e.p
it can be found from an indicator diagram using a planimeter .
ton is a unit for measuring refrigeration effect
tonnage is measure of displacement like dwt
tonne is a unit for measuring weight

HOW LL U TEST AIR STARTING VALVES, 1 WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNIG N 2 NOT RUNING
function 3:-
1) What are the routine tests and maintenance on high expansion foam system?
2) What are the preparations before the ship going for dry-docking?
3) Your have just joined a ship then how will you identify that the ship is following the regulations of marpol annexe 1?
4) What are the entries made in Oil record book?

function 5:-
1) Safeties on main switchboard
2) Safeties and precautions on portable electrical equipments
3) what is the routine maintenance on the starter of main air compressor which is of automatic start stop type?

I have failed in these two functions. I couldn't answer him 1st question from function 3 and 3rd question from function 5.
All other questions i have answered satisfactorily.
But the fellow failed me bcoz of these 2 ques.

A: THIS METHOD IS FILT TREE METHOD. ITS NOT RIGID, IF U REMOVE VIBRATION DAMBEN WIRE U CAN REMOVE THESE BALDES. FOR MORE INFORMATION REFER REEDS.
wat is lift of relief valve in fuel system
AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THR IS NO RELIEF V/V IN THE FUEL SYSTEM EXCEPT THE ONE ON THE SUPPLY N CIRCULATING PUMPS. BUT V LL HAVE A PR REGULATING VALVE IN THE FUEL SYSTEM, WHICH IS CONNECTED BETWEEN INLET MANIFOLD N RETURN MANIFOLD. ONE MORE THING U LL HAVE A NEEDLE VALVE N SLIDE VALVE IN FUEL INJECTOR.

few answers............
all suction pipe end will be bell mouthed to reduce the effect of vortex formation ,when the liquid level is very low so that air is not sucked into the system and thus avoids loosing suction which helps in stripping .
four stroke engine speed is very high compared to a low speed two stroke engine and hence it is difficult to take an indicator diagram using traditional indicator card, but with modern technologies like piezo electric based indicator drawing device we can take indicator diagram of four stroke engines also.
indicated pressure is the instantaneous pressure inside a cylinder or in an indicator diagram the pressure at any crank angle
